On Friday, Feburary 3rd, students celebrated the 100th day of school. While in Physical Education class, students celebrated by dribbling a ball 100 times, running around a hool-a-hoop 100 times, jumping rope 100 times, striking a ball with a paddle 100 times, and tossing and catching a bean bag 100 times. What a great way to celebrate this exciting day and exercise!

Character Education word of the month: RESPONSIBILITY
To be responsible means that people can rely on you. We can demonstrate responsibilty by being on time, being someone that others can depend on, doing the right thing regardless of what others are doing and telling the truth.

During PE class we took 10 minutes to discuss the character education word of the month. The students watched a video that demonstrated character, responsilbilty and respect. After the video the students discussed how they can demonstrate respect and responsibilty during their daily living

Fuel Up To Play 60 and the Dairy Council of Florida brought to our school Maurice Jones- Drew from the NFL Jaguars. Jones-Drew met with all the FUTP60 5th graders in the media center before having an assembly with 3rd-5th grade students. During the assembly he spoke to the students of the importance of staying active for at least 60 minutes per day and eating healthy.

Bike safety and pedestrian safety unit is in full swing. The students are enjoying riding the bikes and applying safety skills for riding. We will continue to ride bicycles in PE classes trough November 18th.

Did you know that nearly one-third of bicyclist killed in traffic crashes were between 5 and 15 years of age. Many of these collisions involved bicyclist error, such as failing to stop or yield at intersections, riding against traffic, riding into the street or diagonally across it without first yielding and scanning for traffic.
In Physical Education and with the help of Character Ed we are teaching the students safe bicycle riding habits that will prevent injuries by equipping the students with skills and knowledge they will use throughout their lives. Between November 1st -19th DCPS will provide us with a trailer full of bikes and helmets. The students will be able to demonstrate the skills learned in PE class.

ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL!?!?

This fall NFL PLAY 60 and United Way are teaming up for Back to Football Friday, a first-of-its-kind campaign to make youth health and wellness a nationwide priority. On Friday, September 10, in cities and towns nationwide, passion for the NFL will be on full display as schools and offices show their NFL team pride for a chance to win exciting prizes.

Those of you that have PE this week will participate in a variety of football stations including passing, punting, and kicking, among other football related events.

Chets Creek will also be holding Back to Football Friday, this Friday, September 10. Show your passion for football by wearing your favorite team’s jersey to school this Friday. All classes are invited to come to the track right after their lunch on Friday to walk 2 laps around the track. All students who complete the ½ mile walk will be entered into a raffle for a chance to win 1 of 10 footballs autographed by our very own Jacksonville Jaguars!

If all 1,300+ students participate, we will reach our goal of walking a combined total of 650 miles! By showing your NFL team pride and passion for football, as well as raising your health and wellness, you will also be helping our school have a chance to win exciting prizes that will enhance our PE Department’s fitness program.

SO, GET READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL! Wear your favorite team’s jersey to school this Friday and join us on the track for your chance to win!

Track and Field for K- 5th grade

I have asked the students to go home and tell their parents what they are learning to do in PE. They have been learning how to participate in the following events: javelin, discus, shot put, hurdles, running long jump, and the baton relay race. The students are meeting the Next Generation Standards in Physical Education by demonstrating how to run and hurdle a succession of low to medium levels of obstacles (PE.M.1.12) The students are also demonstrating how to throw a object for distance using the correct technique and accuracy (PE.M.1.8) These events will be the theme for Field Day. Field Day is scheduled for June 7th-9th.

Coach Robinson and his family went to see Coach Timmons in Lawrenceville GA to see the opening of the Gwinnett Braves. Coach Timmons had 2 RBIs to tie the game and scored the winning run. GO TIMMONS!

2010 Let Us Play 2K Run

Let Us Play will be held at the Jaguar's stadium on April 24. You should had already received a registration form from your teacher. There are extra forms at the front office and the Extended front desk. You may register online at
letusplay.org or send it back to our school. Every student who registers will receive a T-shirt and help our school"s PE program win $1000.00 for new PE equipment.
If you participate in the race you will also receive a medal at the end of the race.
We had over 150 students show up last year from our school. Help us to register over 300 students this year and motivate students to take advantage of the life-long benefits associated with both sports and education.

Duval county and 4 other surrounding area county have been given the oppurtunty for a 4th grader to enter a essay contest. The winner will recieve $100 nfl gift card and a assembly at school with Jaxson de Ville. Imagine getting out of math class to clown around with Jaxson de Ville and all your friends.The contest is easy. Just talk to your 4th grade teacher or a PE teacher and your teacher submitt your essay. You need to hurry the deadline is December 18th!

Welcome back students!!! The Chets P.E. Crew is back in the swing of things. Here is our P.E. roster for the 2009-2010 school year:

Coach Bailey: Monday-Friday
Coach Timmons: Monday,Tuesday,Thursday,and Friday
Coach Robbinson: Monday,Tuesday,Thursday,and Friday
Coach Leclair: Mondays and Fridays

This year we have diffent themed activities on different days. Mondays will remain "Manic Monday" with different dodgeball games, Wednesdays are Physical Fitness Testing days, and Fridays will stay "Fun Friday". The "Fun Friday" days will be themed each month this year. September is Team Sports and we are focusing on flag football, soccer, basketball, volleyball, and battleball.

Wii Field Day Games

The Wii Games will start June 1st- 3rd. We are excited about the events. Here are some hints on the field day activities: Mario Races, Wii Soccer, Wii Bowling, Human Golf Target (you do not want to miss this one), and the Shooting Range. These are just a few... but REMEMBER the PE dept is in charge and it is going to get crazy. Wear comfortable clothes- its going to be HOT!

This weekend was the 10th annual Let Us Play Junior 2k. Chets Creek had a great turnout. Thanks to all the teachers and families who came out and supported our school. FOX 30 LET US PLAY! JUNIOR 2K

Attention Students and Parents:
The Chets P.E. crew wanted to let you know of another great fitness opportunity. On April 25 Fox 30 is sponsoring a race downtown at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium. It is a 2 kilometer race (1.24 miles). The race will be taped and aired May 2rd on FOX 30 at noon and again on May 9th at noon. They will also have a children's health and fitness expo Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th at the East Touchdown Club at the stadium from 3:00-8:00. If you are interested in participating in the race get your registration form from one of the P.E. teachers or go online to www.letusplay.org You must sign up by April 15. Thanks and we hope to see you downtown!

~Remember, the class with the most number of students that participate in the race will receive an extra day of P.E. and get to choose the activity!

Last year Chets Creek students had a blast participating in the Wacky Olympics. This years play day will have Wii themed games. This will include tennis, golf, Mario cart races, and baseball, just to name a few. The dates and times will be announced soon. Capture The Flag

The latest buzz down the P.E. hall is the new game being played, Capture The Flag. This game is played with two teams in a huge area. Here is how the game is played:

The area is divided in half with cones. Each team has a marked off area on their side of the field where they have 10 flags. The players have to cross the cones and run on the other teams side to get a flag and bring it back to their side. If they get tagged on the other teams side, the player must return the flag and walk back to his or her team's side. The only safe zone is hula hoops. If a player stops in a hula hoop they cannot be tagged until they leave the hoop. There are also different obstacles set up for the teams to hide or use to their advantage. Each game lasts 5-10 minutes. The team that has the most flags on their side is the winning team.

Coach Leclair Hosts A Jaguar Player In PE Class

Coach Leclair teaches Physical Education 3 times per week at Hyde Park Elementary. This morning she and a second grader played in PE class with Jaguar's running back Maurice Jones-Drew ! The student Justin Cone was picked up at home in a limousine by the Jaguar player and went to school to play in Coach Leclair's PE class. While at school Jones-Drew led the PE classes in activities, part of the "Play 60" to help students get 60 minutes of exercise each day. This special occasion was held as part of the NFL Take a Player to School program, which is sponsored by the JCPenny Afterschool Fund. Make sure to ask Coach Leclair all about it when she joins us in PE on Friday! EAB

Play Safe At Halloween

Red Cross Halloween Safety Tips for Kids and Adults With witches, goblins, and super-heroes descending on neighborhoods across America, the American Red Cross offers parents some safety tips to help prepare their children for a safe and enjoyable trick-or-treat holiday. Halloween should be filled with surprise and enjoyment, and following some common sense practices can keep events safer and more fun.
Walk, slither, and sneak on sidewalks, not in the street.
Look both ways before crossing the street to check for cars, trucks, and low-flying brooms.
Cross the street only at corners.
Don't hide or cross the street between parked cars.
Wear light-colored or reflective-type clothing so you are more visible. (And remember to put reflective tape on bikes, skateboards, and brooms, too!)
Plan your route and share it with your family. If possible, have an adult go with you.
Carry a flashlight to light your way.
Keep away from open fires and candles. (Costumes can be extremely flamable.)
Visit homes that have the porch light on.
Accept your treats at the door and never go into a stranger's house.
Use face paint rather than masks or things that will cover your eyes.
Be cautious of animals and strangers.
Have a grown-up inspect your treats before eating. And don't eat candy if the package is already opened. Small, hard pieces of candy are a choking hazard for young children.

Speedminton...Anytime...Anywhere

Ultimate frisbee was a major success. All the students were active, having fun, and learning how to throw a frisbee the correct way. Sport Stacking is working wonders on increasing the students hand eye coordination. We use sport stacking as a way to increase faster reading due to the left to right motion of stacking the cups.

A new addition to Chets Creek is Speedminton. This activity improves on the students' hand eye coordination that was developed in sport stacking. It is an activity that not only aligns with the Sunshine State Standards, but can be used to relate to classroom topics such as science (Newton's 1st, 2nd, and 3rd laws) and math (measuring distances). We will continue to relate speedminton as well as other units to classroom subjects to help teach the whole student.

As many of you may know, the obesity epidemic is growing. Every Wednesday at Chets Creek, we participate in the President's Challenge to combat the obesity epidemic. We have stressed that having a healthy body promotes a longer lifespan, ability to do more physical activities at a higher age, a sound mind, and a sound emotional state. Well the year is off to a great start already. All of us are excited to start some new actities in P.E. this year. Chet's Creek has a new member to our P.E. crew this year. Mr. Jones (www.freewebs.com/qualitydrivenpe) a UNF student intern, will be teaching this Fall in P.E.

We have been working on many exciting activities for all grades. Some of the activities are:Bowling,Dance Dance Revolution, Golf, Hacky Sack, Juggling, Presidents Challenge, Soccer, Speedminton, Sport Stacking, Track events and relays, Ultimate Frisbee.

We stayed active this summer by jogging, swimming, and cycling ( not as much as Mr. Ruark) . We would like to cover Antarctica's P.E. Hall bulletin board with pictures of how YOU stayed active during the summer. Bring in a picture with your first and last name on it. We will attempt to return the picture to you when we are finished with the board. However, we can not promise that you will get it back.
